Leigh Griffiths, Former Celtic and Scotland star, was arrested as part of a probe into sports betting as police swooped on his luxury home in Lanarkshire before he was released without charge.

Griffiths was detained after detectives searched his home in an early morning raid on his luxury home in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. He was capped 22 times by Scotland, was arrested, and later released without charge.

Ex-Celtic Star Arrested in Sports Betting Probe

Police swooped on the luxury home of former Celtic star Leigh Griffiths on Thursday as part of a probe into sports betting.

Two other footballing figures were arrested and released without charge as part of the investigation following searches of properties in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, and Airdrie, the Daily Record reports.

One is a 35-year-old midfielder who still plays for a club in the Scottish ­Championship. The other is a 37-year-old former defender who is an assistant manager with a Scottish Junior side.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Following a pre-planned police operation on Thursday, December 1, three men, aged 37, 35, and 32, were arrested in the Bothwell, Bonnyrigg, and Airdrie areas in connection with an investigation into alleged gambling incidents in sport. All three men were released without charge pending further inquiries.”

Officers descended on the striker’s £675,000 mansion at about 7 am yesterday.

It’s believed more than 10 officers attended the four-bedroom property, which sits in a quiet cul-de-sac in the luxury housing development. Uniformed police and CID officers are said to have been involved in the search of the house, which is currently up for sale.

The operation is understood to have lasted for about ­two-and-a-half hours, with the police leaving the scene at about 9.30 am. Police also used torches to peer into vehicles parked in the street.

Sources say neighbors in the upmarket area were shocked by the heavy police presence.

Career

The striker, born in Leith, Edinburgh, scored 123 goals in 261 games for Celtic during an eight-year stint at Celtic Park. He has also played for Hibs, Livingston, Dundee, and Falkirk.

He has also played for the English side Wolverhampton Wanderers and became a fan favorite with many of the Tartan Army. One of his best performances in a Scotland shirt came when he scored two free kicks into now-Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart’s net in a 2-2 draw with England at Hampden Park.

He was also a key player in the first Scotland side to reach a major tournament since the France 98 World Cup by sealing a place at Euro 2020. He struck the first penalty in the shoot-out win over Serbia which took Steve Clarke’s men to the tournament.
