Josephine Melville, the actor, best known for her work on EastEnders, has died backstage at a theatre after a performance.
Melville had been appearing as Aunt Maggie in the production of Nine Night at Nottingham Playhouse.

Ms. Melville played Tess Parker in EastEnders in 1986 and acted in The Bill and Casualty.
Nottingham Playhouse said: “The entire company and staff at both theatres are in shock.
“Josephine was a genuinely remarkable and well-loved person, a revered and deeply respected performer, director, producer, archivist and writer, and a tremendous Auntie Maggie in Nine Night.
“We are offering our full support to her family, our onstage and production crew, and all staff at this awful time.”
All performances of Nine Night at Nottingham Playhouse have been canceled.
Career
Born in Essex, Melville’s acting credits included parts in EastEnders, The Bill and Casualty, and several theatre roles.
In 1985, she played Kelvin Carpenter’s girlfriend, Tessa Parker, on EastEnders for eight episodes. Earlier this year, Melville appeared in the music video for Ella Henderson’s single Brave.
The venue paid tribute to Melville, a writer, and director, describing her as a “wonderful and well-loved person” and a “revered and deeply respected performer.”
